Supernova SN 2025mvn in the NGC 5033 spiral galaxy: an image – 18 June 2025.

We observed supernova SN 2025mvn in the beautiful galaxy NGC 5033 and we’re pleased to share our image.

The image above comes from the average of 17, 300-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E)  robotic unit  available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project and installed in Manciano, Italy. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper left insert.

We estimated SN 2025mvn as bright as mag. 14.8 (R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue), likely around its peak. SN 2025mvn was discovered on 3 June 2025 and it is a type II supernova.

NGC 5033, the host galaxy is a bright, nearby spiral located roughly 40 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. Shining at an apparent magnitude of about 10.8, this galaxy is seen at an oblique angle, revealing a rich structure of spiral arms wrapped around a bright, active core.

What makes NGC 5033 particularly interesting is its active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is classified as a Seyfert type 1galaxy, meaning its core emits strong radiation from material accreting onto a supermassive black hole. This central region outshines the surrounding galaxy in various wavelengths, particularly in ultraviolet and X-rays, revealing the presence of hot, energetic gas close to the black hole. Observations in the optical and radio have shown signs of ionized gas outflows, typical of AGN-driven activity.

We will monitor ths object on the next months.
