Supernova SN 2026acd in the NGC 4168 elliptical galaxy: an image – 15 Feb. 2026

We observed supernova SN 2026acd in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4168 and here we share our image.

Supernova SN 2026acd in NGC 4168: 15 Feb. 2026.

Supernova SN 2026acd in NGC 4168: 15 Feb. 2026.

The image above comes from the average of 5, 120-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E)  robotic unit  available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project and installed in Manciano, Italy. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper left insert.

We estimated SN 2026acd as bright as mag. 14.2 (R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). SN 2026acd was discovered on 11 Jan. 2026 and it is a type Ia supernova.

NGC 4168 is an elliptical galaxy located roughly 100 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. It is an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is classified as a Seyfert type II galaxy.

Just on the upper left of its nucleus, we see the intermediate spiral galaxy NGC 4165.

We will monitor ths object on the next months.
