Supernova SN 2021wyw in NGC 7501 galaxy: an image – 29 Aug. 2021.

We observed supernova SN 2021wyw in the NGC 7501 elliptical galaxy, as part of our supernova follow-up program: here it is our image.

The image above comes from the average of ten, 120-second exposures, unfiltered, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper left inset. Many other faint galaxies are also visible.

The host is NGC 7501, an elliptical galaxy located at about 550 millions of light years from us. As for the supernova, we estimated SN 2021wyw as bright as mag. 17.2 (unfiltered, R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). This transient was discovered on 25 Aug. 2021 by the  survey and it is a type Ia supernova.

Further observations will follow, weather permitting.
