NGC 5371 and supernova SN 2020bio: an image – 24 Mar. 2020

We imaged supernova SN 2020bio and its host galaxy NGC 5371, as part of our supernova follow-up program, two months after its discovery. Enjoy this superb view!

The image above comes from the average of twelve, 300-seconds exposures, unfiltered, remotely taken with “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available at Virtual Telescope. SN 2020bio is indicated by an arrow in the upper left insert.

The host spiral galaxy, NGC 5371, is placed at about 100 millions of light years from us. It is a very beautiful galaxy: look at its elegant arms and structure! As for the supernova, we estimated SN 2020bio as bright as mag. 17.4 (unfiltered, R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR1 star catalogue), so it is obviously fading. This transient was discovered on 29 Jan. 2020 by Koichi Itagaki (Japan) and it is a type II supernova.

Further observations ill follow, weather permitting.
