Jupiter and Saturn are closer and closer – 19 Dec. 2020

Two days before their historic conjunction, Jupiter and Saturn were a stunning sight, despite the poor and bright sky. Here it is our latest view.

Jupiter and Saturn, about 1/4th of a degree apart. 19 Dec. 2020.

The image above comes from a single 1-second, blue filtered exposure, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available at Virtual Telescope. The imaging scale is 0.63″/pixel. I used a blue filter to strongly reduce the brightness of the objects. Looking at the image carefully, we can barely see three of the main satellites of Jupiter: Ganymede and Europa (left from Jupiter), plus Io (just right from Jupiter).

* on 21 Dec. we will show this event live, online *

Below you can see a simulation, showing how the two giant, gas planets will show around the formal conjunction (21 Dec.)

Don’t miss this amazing event, just look up!
