The Summer 2021 Blue Moon: online observation – 22 Aug. 2021

Next 22 Aug. will bring us a so-called “Blue Moon“. Nothing to do with the color of our satellite, of course, it is just “an additional” full Moon. For sure, it will put on its usual great show and we will share live the Moon rising above the legendary skyline of Rome.

We have one full Moon every month on average, as it takes about 29.5 days to our satellite to complete one entire phase cycle. This is a bit less than the typical month length. This is why, from time to time, we have 13 full Moon in one year. There are two ways for this extra Moon to show: sometimes it is the 2nd full Moon in a given month, sometimes it is the 4th of a given season.

This is where the Blue Moon comes into play. Some people call “Blue Moon” the 2nd full Moon of a given month, some other people the 3rd full Moon of a season sporting four of them. Looking at the source of this dual definition is quite interesting.

This time we are in the second case described above: the 22 Aug. full Moon is the 3rd one of this summer, which will end with a total four full Moons.

We will show the upcoming 21 Aug. Blue Moon live, online, while it will rise above the legendary skyline of Rome!
