Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS: close-up and large view – 24 Nov. 2024

We release a couple of images of comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, now on its journey to the outer space, showing both the inner coma and the stunning spot of the sky the comet is crossing now.

The image above comes from the average combination of 12, 120-second exposures, remotely taken with the Samyang 135+Paramount ME+ZWO ASI 6200MC Pro robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy, under the darkest skies of the Italian peninsula (SQM=21.5). The telescope tracked at the motion rates of the comet.

The field of view is about 18 deg. x 11 deg. Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS continues to cross a very dense region of stars and dust, now in Aquila: on the upper left corner, its brightest star Altair is visibile. It is a mazing to see so many stars on the background, with plenty of dark dust, too, the latter helping in seeing the comet, now getting fainter and fainter. Soon, the comet will be in front of the bright, starry background and this will make hard to spot it.

We also looked inside the inner coma.

The image above comes from the sigma clipping combination of 5, 120-second exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit part of our facility. The telescope tracked at the motion rates of the comet.

The ion tail is well visible, with its typical “rays” deparing from the central condensation.

We will continue monitoring C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS as long as possible.
