Comet 17P/Holmes: image of the outburst (01 Feb. 2015)

Comet 17P/Holmes: 01 Feb. 2015

After the previous visit, comet 17P/Holmes was observed again during its ongoing outburst, despite the extremely bright, almost full Moon.

The image above comes from the average of seven, 180-seconds unfiltered exposures, remotely collected with the  PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked at the apparent rate of the comet. The image scale is 1.8″/pixel. The comet shows pretty well its central condensation, with a pale coma all around; it looks more diffuse than two nights earlier.
