Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: high resolution image – 27 July 2023

Thanks to a good seeing, we could capture a nice set of images of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, 7 days after its bright outburst. Here we share some interesting processing.

The images above come from the median combination of 29, 180-second unfiltered exposures, plus some additional processing and were remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. Images were collected under good seeing conditions.

On the panel above we can see: the master image (upper left); a 15 deg. Larson-Sekanina rotational gradient (upper right); unsharp masking (bottom right); Richardson-Lucy deconvolution (bottom left).

Using two images taken on 23 and 26 July, we could show how the coma expanded in three days:

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: evolution between 23 and 26 July.

Several interesting details are visible, making this comet a nice target for us for the upcoming weeks.
