Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: a new image and time lapse – 28 July 2023

We continue monitoring comet 12P/Pons-Brooks and its evolution. Here it is a new image and an updated time-lapse, showing the expansion of the coma after the 20 July bright outburst.

The image above comes from the combination of 19, 180-second unfiltered exposures, plus some additional processing and were remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. Images were collected under fair seeing conditions.

On the panel above we can see: the master image (center); a 15 deg. Larson-Sekanina rotational gradient (upper right); Richardson-Lucy deconvolution (upper left).

Using three images taken on 23,  26 and 28 July, we could show how the coma expanded in three days:

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: evolution between 23 and 28 July.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: evolution between 23 and 28 July.

Several interesting details are visible, making this comet a nice target for us for the upcoming weeks.
