Supernova SN 2023wrk in the NGC 3690 galaxy: an image – 3 Feb. 2024.

We imaged supernova SN 2023wrk in NGC 3690, member of a stunning interacting pair of galaxies. Here it is that beautiful spot of sky.

The image above comes from the average of 9, 300-second exposures, unfiltered and unguided, remotely taken with the C14+Paramount ME+ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. The image was gently processed to show all the finest details and structures visible in the original data.

We estimated SN 2023wrk as bright as mag. 16.2 (unfiltered, R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). It was discovered on 4 Nov. 2023 and it is a type Ia supernova.

NGC 3690, with IC 694, forms the Arp 299 pair of interacting galaxies, both classified as barred irregular ones. As a result of their interaction, both galaxies show remarkable starburst regions. The pair is at about 135 million of light years from the Earth.

A total of 13 supernovae have been discovered in this pair since 1992.
