Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 CR9 close encounter: an image – 25 May 2024.
On 11 June 2024, the Potentially Hazardous Earth asteroid 2024 CR9 will have a relatively close, but obviously safe encounter with the Earth, coming as close as 7.4 million of km from us. Here it is an image of this rock, while it was approaching our planet.
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 CR9: 25 May 2024.
The image above comes from the combination of three, 120-second exposures, remotely taken with the ARTEC250+Paramount ME+C3Pro61000EC robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy. The telescope tracked the apparent motion of the asteroid, so it looks like a sharp dot of light, indicated with a white arrow, while stars leave bright streaks on the background. At the imaging time, the asteroid was just 7 degrees above the Southern horizon.
At the imaging time, asteroid 2024 CR9 was at about 13 million of km from us, slowly approaching us. This asteroid was discovered by the Panstarrs survey on 15 Feb. 2024.
This 330m – 750m large asteroid will reach its minimum distance (7.4 million of km, 19 times the average lunar distance) from us on 11 June 2024, at 00:02 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there are no risks at all for our planet.
