Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (390725) 2003 HB close encounter: an image – 22 Apr. 2025.
Next 25 May 2025, the Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (390725) 2003 HB will a relatively close and obviously safe encounter with our planet, coming at come as close as 7 million of km from us, 18.2 times the average lunar distance. We captured the image below.
The image above comes from a single 120-second exposure, remotely taken with theCelestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST-10XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked the apparent motion of the asteroid, so it looks like a sharp dot of light, marked with a white arrow, while stars show as short trails.
At the imaging time, potentially hazardous asteroid (390725) 2003 HB was at about 38.9 million of km from us and safely approaching.
This 300 meters large asteroid will reach its minimum distance (about 7 million of km, 18.2 times the average lunar distance) from us on 25 May 2025, at 14:28 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there are no risks at all for our planet.
We will show asteroid 2003 HB live, online, on 24 May 2025: more soon!
