Comet C/2025 R2 SWAN fragmentation: 5 & 6 Nov. 2025 images.
Comet C/2025 R2 SWAN experienced a nucleus breakup and here we present a couple of images documenting the event.
The image above comes from the average of sixteen, 120-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST-10XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy.
Images were carefully processed to show both the components of the cometary nucleus. The following day, using the same telescope, but working under slightly worse seeing conditions, we could not have the same clear detection, even if we likely see an hint of the secondary nucleus, as in the image below.
We will observe this interesting comet again.
